My impression of Vitória

Vitória is a small island and a capital on the coast of Brazil, where nature and urban landscape meet. Everything is within a walking distance: mountains, beaches, bridges, cinemas, and museums. The weather is pleasant all year around and residents and tourists can experience a lot there. You can enjoy the cultural program and the liveliness of a city without traffic jams and chaos; the coziness and charm of an oasis, only 5 minutes to the next bus stop. The city is beautiful, historical, and offers everything that makes Brazil so special. The locals are friendly and you can quickly get used to the relaxed atmosphere of the city, no matter what travel profile you have.

Must-see attractions

In Vitória, you cannot miss the historic sites: the city center with the Gothic cathedral, Carlos Gomes Theater, the Anchieta Palace (house of the state government), and the monastery, which was built on a mountain in 1558 at a height of 154 meters and which offers a beautiful view of the city and the coast. The Camburi Beach, which has a beautiful promenade, and the Pedra da Cebola Park (literally the Onion Stone Park) are also very popular if you want to relax or go out with your family.

Convento da Penha (monastery)

A visit to the first Garoto factory, the largest chocolate manufacturer in South America, is also recommended. You can learn the history of the company and the manufacturing processes, as well as eating as much chocolate as you want. You can also hike not far from the city center. Either at Pedra dos Olhos (“stone with eyes”) or at Fonte Grande Park you can experience nature. And if you are looking forward to the nightlife, you should definitely visit Triângulo das Bermudas, the Bermuda Triangle. It is a neighborhood with a wide range of bars and restaurants. Whether a cozy place or live music, there is something for everyone.

Museu Vale

Best museum in the city

Four of the city’s museums are particularly interesting. The art museum has exhibitions of local, regional and international artists. The Vale Museum shows the history of the railroad in the region and also various special exhibitions. The MUCANE (Museu Capixaba do Negro) focuses on African American history and culture. The Solar Monjardim Museum is an old colonial house, where you can get an insight into the everyday life of the 18th century.

Favorite local dish

The traditional dishes from the region mostly contain seafood. The most famous is the Moqueca Capixaba, which consists of fish, tomatoes, onions, and coriander. This dish must be prepared in traditional clay pots to get the right taste. You can try this anywhere in the city: at a kiosk on the beach or in a chic restaurant on a quiet street.
