Gauss Tips

Here they are: The fresh Gauss tips for the next week (or probably longer):

The corona virus is a huge topic everywhere and as everyone can probably imagine, no public events are recommended in these Gauss tips. Instead, there are a few more ideas about how to spend time at home while avoiding social contacts as much as possible.

Since the Gauss tips of last week were more about general ways to pass the time, the focus this time is going to be on specific activities and offers, which are all free of charge.

Kitchen

  • Currently is the best time to use an ingredient that has been lying around in the closet / the kitchen for a long time and with which you don´t know what to cook. Various recipe websites (e.g. chefkoch, eatsmarter and Real) offer the possibility to enter your ingredients and to get suitable recipes suggested.

Education

  • With the wide range of courses and lectures on Edx you can continue your education free of charge.
  • On the website Freecodecamp you can learn programming for free with thousands of videos, articles and interactive lessons.
  • On the same website there is also a collection of 450 free online courses of the Ivy League from different subject areas. (The eight Ivy League universities, including Harvard, Princeton, and Yale are among the most prestigious, best-known, and most expensive universities in the United States.)

Concerts & theater

The Süddeutsche Zeitung created a guide about digitally available concerts, performances, readings and much more. It is being updated constantly. Some highlights are:

  • Almost every evening there are DJ sets or live music from different clubs in Berlin
  • The Vienna State Opera streams recordings of previous opera and ballet performances daily. The streams start in the evening and are available for 24 hours each.
  • The Berliner Philharmoniker stream their performances and concerts here.
  • Rolling Stone magazine organizes living room concerts on its Instagram channel. Famous celebrities play a small concert every Wednesday at 8:00 pm under the motto “In my room”.

It is also a good time to follow your favorite musicians on Instagram and Facebook, as many smaller bands are giving living room concerts as a live stream every week.

Museums

Most museums worldwide are currently closed, but many (large and small ones) of them offer virtual tours, e.g. these:

Google Streetview also offers virtual tours of many museums worldwide, e.g. the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the National Gallery in London and also to many sights such as Machu Picchu, the pyramids in Egypt and many more.

Travel & Attractions – When your trip is canceled, but the desire to travel remains

  • Gauss Telegraph: World trip from home in 30 days here
  • With Google Streetview you can choose your favourite travel destination and walk through the area virtually.
  • GeoGuessr is a game in which you can explore places virtually, similar to Google Streetview. Then you have to guess where this place is on the world map and get the more points, the better you hit.
