Semperoper

My impressions of Dresden

Zwinger

Dresden is the state capital and the second largest city in Saxony. Part of the landscape is the Elbe river, which runs in the middle of the city. Dresden is a very old settlement and it is therefore full of history. A walk through Dresden’s old town is almost a journey through time. The architecture is characterized by different eras, primarily by the baroque and Mediterranean architecture. Imposing and outstanding buildings can be seen in every direction. Unfortunately, Dresden was heavily bombed in February 1945 and the old town was largely damaged; that means, the city had to be rebuilt. However, that does not affect the beauty of this city of art and culture.

Frauenkirche

Most important sights

The Semperoper is recognized as one of the most beautiful theaters in the world. The building was built three times using Renaissance architecture: first in 1841 for the opening, then in 1878 after a fire and again in 1985 after the Second World War. The Zwinger is a complex of buildings in the Baroque style. You can walk quietly in the courtyard and garden, as well as visit various exhibitions on art, science and history, and cultural events. The symbol of the city is the Frauenkirche, which has a history dating back to the 11th century. After the Second World War, the ruins were left for a long time at the site of the former church. The reconstruction took place between 1996 and 2005. Today you can visit the church and have a breathtaking view of the city and the Elbe from the roof lantern. The Kunsthof in Neustadt is also particularly interesting. Different courtyards combine art and architecture in different subjects. The Hof der Elemente, for example, consists of rain pipes, which play a visual and audible spectacle in rainy weather.

Best museums in the city

The Museum Albertinum offers a large and diverse collection of works of art: romantic and contemporary, painting, and sculpture. Anyone there can learn a lot about art and history. The Military History Museum deals with the topics of war and violence. With stories since 1300, the exhibition serves to discuss the causes and consequences of wars. For those who are interested in the topic, a visit can take hours because the museum divides the many exhibits into 5 floors.

Hof der Elemente

Favorite regional dish

In Dresden you can find first-class restaurants where you can order traditional Dresden Sauerbraten with red cabbage and best experience the atmosphere of the old town. But we also recommend the alternative restaurants in Neustadt, where you can try delicious and unique dishes, such as nuts roast or sliced seitan and zucchini.
