Burj Al Arab

My impression of Dubai

Dubai (دبي) is the most populous city and one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Up until the beginning of the oil era, Dubai was only known within the Middle East. Nowadays, it has become one of the major hubs in Asia. Contrary to other places in Asia, Dubai’s history is relatively short. From being a fishing village in the 18th century, Dubai is now home to the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, numerous high-rises, luxury hotels, futuristic buildings and many artificial islands. It currently holds over 200 Guinness World Records, such as the city with the most super-skyscrapers (300 m or taller), largest indoor ski resort, tallest hotel, tallest twisted tower, largest OLED screen and highest tennis court. Dubai is also a very cosmopolitan city, given that expats make up over 80 % of the population and roughly 200 nationalities live in the country.

Must-see attractions

On your visit to Dubai, you can first start in Old Dubai to learn about the history of the city. There you can visit the Dubai museum and Sheikh Saeed Al Maktoum’s House, the residence of the former ruler of Dubai, which is located by Dubai Creek. Afterwards, you can cross the creek and head to the Gold or Spice Souk. Although, you can buy other things besides jewelry and spices. Dubai Frame is one of the newest attractions that you cannot miss. It is divided in three galleries portraying the past, the present and the future of Dubai. On the Sky deck level you’ll get views of old and new Dubai. This level also features a high-tech glass floor. Another famous attraction is the Dubai Mall, which houses the Dubai Aquarium and provides an entry to the Burj Khalifa. Just outside the mall lies the Dubai fountain, one of the largest performing fountains in the world.

Burj Khalifa

Furthermore, there are many other activities which you can do in Dubai, like taking a Water Bus on the Dubai Water Canal, visiting the Aquaventure Waterpark on the Palm Jumeirah or strolling the Dubai Marina Walk. Moreover, it is recommended to combine your stay in Dubai with a day trip to the neighboring emirates of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.

Best place in the city

The SKY Lounge on the 148th floor of the Burj Khalifa is one of the best locations in the city. Its terrace is currently the highest outdoor observation deck at 555.7 meters above the ground. A visit here is quite a memorable experience. If you choose the right time, you can see the sunset twice on the same day due to its height. After roaming around this floor, you can head down to the 124th and 125th floors to visit their observation decks, which are also included on your ticket. Though the ticket to the 148th floor is significantly higher than the standard ticket (floors 124+125), it’s a purchase you won’t regret.

Food in Dubai

It’s hard to define the Emirati cuisine, since it’s very similar to the gastronomy of other countries of the Arab World. Complimentary Arabic coffee and dates are a symbol of the Arabic hospitality. Given the high number of expats living in Dubai, the city’s gastronomic offer is very multicultural.
