Gauss-Telegraph: How To… Stay healthy during the lockdown

by Mehdi Mnaouar

Lockdowns were introduced as a consequence of the global pandemic. For many, this period is a breakthrough for mental and physical health. To stay fit during the lockdown, you should follow these rules.

  1. Eat healthy;

Nutrition plays an important role in your well-being. It is recommended to eat five portions of fruit and vegetables, cereals, sufficient protein. Industrial products such as potato chips, cola and cookies should be avoided. It is also important to pay special attention to the portion size of the food and to regulate our energy consumption so that we can cover our needs without gaining weight.

  1. Create a routine and eat consciously

In times of uncertainty it is normal to be anxious, sad, stressed and frightened. Maintaining a normal daily routine can help to control some of this stress. One way to achieve this goal is to eat at fixed times and plan meals in advance. Stress can cause us to snack out of boredom and thus gain weight. Therefore, avoid eating at home all those foods that are not nutritious. You must sit down to eat, put the food on a plate and evaluate the amount eaten, eliminating all distractions: TV, computer, telephone, etc. during the meal.

  1. Stay hydrated;

Maintaining fluid intake is essential for general health. If access to tap water is safe, it is the healthiest and cheapest drink. Other beverages, such as sugar-free coffee and herbal teas or iced tea or sugar-free, brewed or flavoured (sparkling) water are also a good choice for hydration.

  1. Stay active at home;

Physical activity is beneficial for both body and mind. Healthy adults should aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity per day.

  1. Get enough sleep and get quality sleep;

A lack of quality sleep can have a negative effect on our physical and mental health and reduce the ability of our immune system to fight infections. As a general rule, adults should try to get at least 7 hours per night of quality sleep.

Organize your sleep pattern and maintain the same sleep rhythm on weekends.

Ensure that your room is quiet, dark and at a comfortable temperature and switch off your electronic devices before going to bed.

My experience with it:

Isolation can quickly become a source of discomfort if you are not careful and let yourself go. You need to stay in touch with family and friends. You need to find something to distract yourself and pass the time.
