Themed tour: Caution Allergy Plants! – August 22nd, 2023 at 5:30 pm

A variety of allergenic plants will be featured at the Botanical Gardens on August 22nd. These can be problematic for people with asthma or hay fever and/or cause irritation to the skin or eyes on contact.

A worldwide increase in this phenomenon has been observed for years. Almost every third German citizen suffers from allergic symptoms. Over the last decades, the number of people affected by pollen allergies has increased dramatically. Skin allergies such as contact eczema, light dermatitis and hives caused by plant allergens are also widespread. Skin allergy-causing plants may include: Rue, Diptam and Spurge (see photo), also garden foxtail, marigold, ornamental tobacco or Wandelröschen belong to them.

In nature, home and garden we constantly come into contact with native and exotic plants. Here we encounter different plant families, which can have „effects”.

With the themed tour “Caution! Allergy plants” Michael Kraft contributes a small part to the prevention of plant allergies.
